The Drop komt naar Friesland
Wat is The Drop… Is het een educatief centrum voor de Wadden? Is het een hotel? Een restaurant? Een toren met panoramadek? Ja op al deze vragen. The Drop wordt de hoogste roestvrij stalen sculptuur ter wereld en een landmark op het ontmoetingspunt van vasteland en zee. Ronald A. Westerhuis creëert in Harlingen een blijvend kunstwerk met meer impact dan een enkel werk van zijn hand ooit heeft gehad.
Ronald A. Westerhuis: “Dit nieuwe project is meer dan opwindend want ik stap hiermee in een nieuwe dimensie waar kunst, bouwkunst en architectuur elkaar vinden. Mijn werk in de openbare ruimte tot nu toe kan je raken en je kunt er van genieten als aanschouwer. The Drop wordt mijn eerste permanente kunstwerk waarbij het gaat om veel meer dan de relatie met de ruimte en met jou. Het gaat over ervaren. Want The Drop is er om te bezoeken. Als het af is, staat hier een kunstwerk dat het magnifieke landschap van de Friese Waddenkust markeert. Hier hebben de mensen een diepgewortelde relatie met de zee. The Drop verbeeldt deze relatie en laat hem je voelen. De schoonheid van The Drop beperkt zich niet tot het landmark zelf, want het wordt de aanjager van een mooie ontwikkeling aan de westzijde van het trotse havenstadje Harlingen. Ik heb afgelopen februari het plan voor The Drop aan lokale en regionale bestuurders en belanghebbenden mogen presenteren. Samen met mijn partners in de bouw, ontwikkeling an architectuur ben ik er klaar voor om deze droom te realiseren. I shall build!”

The Drop to rise up in Friesland
What is The Drop… Is it a hotel? A restaurant? A tower with panorama decks? An educational center for the Unesco World Heritage-listed Wadden Sea? Yes to all those questions. The Drop will be the tallest stainless steel sculpture in the world, rising up where land and sea meet. In the province of Friesland in The Netherlands, Ronald A. Westerhuis creates a permanent work of art which will have more impact than any of his works have had before.
Ronald A. Westerhuis: “This new project is beyond exciting because it allows me to enter a new dimension in which architecture and conceptual art team up. It will be my first permanent landmark that is not just there to enjoy and admire for its artistic values, its presence or visual effect. The Drop offers more. It will be a place to visit and experience from within. It thrills me to know that when realized, my work will be part of the magnificent landscape of this northern part of The Netherlands, where people have a deeply felt relationship with the sea. The Drop embodies this relation through its shape and features. The beauty of the project is that The Drop will be the central energizer for the development of a whole area at the edge of the proud seaside town of Harlingen. We’ve presented the concept to local stakeholders this February. With my partners in the construction and architecture, I am ready to create this dream. I shall build!”
